Current Polling Places AfD Slightly Behind Union in Germany

Recent Insa survey results reveal minor shifts in German political landscape amid AfD's classification as far-right by domestic intelligence.
A recent poll conducted by the Insa polling institute has indicated a notable shift in the German political scene, showing that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has dropped to 24 percent, slightly behind the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) at 25 percent.

This marks a decrease for the AfD, which fell by one percentage point from previous results.

The survey was conducted between Monday and Friday of the past week, primarily before the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz) classified the AfD as a party with confirmed far-right extremism.

Despite the CDU’s anticipated nomination of Friedrich Merz as the next Chancellor, the party has not gained additional support among voters.

The current standing reflects a decline from its February performance, where the CDU achieved 28.5 percent in polling.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has seen a slight uptick of one percentage point, bringing its polling to 16 percent, which aligns closely with its results from the 2025 federal election.

The Free Democratic Party (FDP) also increased by one point to reach 4 percent but remains below the critical five-percent threshold required for representation in the Bundestag.

The Green Party and The Left remain unchanged at 12 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

The newly formed political alliance led by Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) maintains a polling figure of 4 percent and is not projected to secure seats in the Bundestag.

The share for other parties is reported at 5 percent, reflecting a decrease of one point from the previous week.

Should elections be held on a Sunday, combined support for the CDU/CSU and the SPD would yield only 41 percent of the vote, falling short of the 44 percent needed for a governing majority.

Consequently, any coalition formation would require the inclusion of either the Greens or The Left.

Mathematically, a coalition between the Union and the AfD could secure 49 percent of the vote; however, the CDU has categorically ruled out such a partnership prior to the recent classification of the AfD’s ideological stance by the Verfassungsschutz.

Polling Summary from the Insa Sunday Trend:
- Union: 25 percent (unchanged)
- AfD: 24 percent (-1)

- Greens: 12 percent (unchanged)
- The Left: 10 percent (unchanged)
