A large-scale clinical trial began in the United States to evaluate a drug that may extend the lifespan of dogs, particularly senior canines.

Known as the STAY trial, it is being conducted by Loyal, a San Francisco-based company focused on animal health.

The trial is designed as a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving a minimum of one thousand senior dogs.

This initiative follows prior successful preclinical and pilot studies, which have indicated potential benefits of the drug being tested.

According to Alex Robb, the medical director of Goodheart Animal Health Center in Colorado, participating senior dogs will receive daily doses of the drug during the trial’s four-year span, accompanied by regular clinical evaluations.

To qualify for the study, dogs must be at least ten years old and weigh fourteen pounds or more.

Pet owners participating in the trial are required to transfer their dog’s primary care to a designated study clinic and commit to a stringent schedule of veterinary visits—six visits in the first year followed by two visits each year for the next three years.

This structured plan aims to facilitate comprehensive monitoring of the dogs' health and the drug's effects over time.

The focus of the research is to better understand factors contributing to aging in dogs, which exhibit a higher metabolic rate compared to humans.

Despite advancements in veterinary science that have improved overall healthcare for dogs, their lifespan has not increased concurrently with the extended life expectancies seen in humans.

Loyal plans to utilize the data gathered during the STAY trial to apply for conditional approval of the drug from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by the end of the year.

Recruitment for the trial continues at various veterinary clinics across the United States, with the aim of further exploring the potential for enhanced longevity in senior dogs.
