Ukraine Conducts Major Drone Assault on Moscow Amid Ongoing U.S. Peace Negotiations

A significant drone strike on Russian military targets coincides with critical peace talks in Saudi Arabia involving Ukrainian and American officials.
In a notable escalation of conflict, Ukraine executed its largest drone attack on Moscow since the war's outbreak, just hours before a scheduled peace negotiation involving Ukrainian and American delegations in Saudi Arabia.

The Ukrainian military reported successful strikes targeting key Russian military assets that are perceived as crucial to the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Russian military sources stated that 337 Ukrainian drones were intercepted across ten regions of the country during the night of March 11. The assault reportedly resulted in three fatalities and 18 injuries, as well as significant damage to various residential buildings.

Moscow's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, acknowledged the scale of the attack, describing it as the most extensive drone offensive against the city and confirming that emergency services effectively responded to the incident, successfully downing 74 drones in the surrounding area.

In response to the drone strikes, Russian authorities initiated a criminal investigation based on terrorism-related charges.

While the Russian military maintained that its air defense systems had successfully mitigated the attack, Ukrainian officials contended that the aftermath of damage to civilian infrastructure reflected deficiencies in Russian defense capabilities.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, suggested that the attack served as a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the importance of finding a path toward peace.

Meanwhile, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ukrainian officials including Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov were participating in discussions with American officials led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Yermak noted that initial dialogues were positive, emphasizing a shared commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace.

The Kremlin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, characterized the drone attack as insufficient to impact the ongoing negotiations, indicating that there had been no formal dialogue established that could be disrupted.

He highlighted that American officials were currently assessing Ukraine's readiness for peace talks.

The White House previously indicated its prioritization of facilitating negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, viewing the diplomatic efforts in Saudi Arabia as a critical engagement.

Ukrainian representatives expressed hopes for productive discussions aimed at securing U.S. military assistance and intelligence support while outlining their positions regarding peace negotiations and necessary concessions.

In related international developments, NATO leaders from 30 nations convened in Paris to deliberate on security guarantees for Ukraine, amidst concerns regarding the potential reduction of U.S. involvement in the conflict.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are leading initiatives to establish a coalition geared towards providing peacekeeping forces should a resolution be reached.
