Ricarda Lang Calls for Strategic Reevaluation within Germany's Greens Party

Former co-chair advocates for a shift toward a more assertive political model following electoral challenges.
Ricarda Lang, a leading member of the German Bundestag and former co-chair of the Greens party, has publicly urged a reassessment of the party’s strategic direction after experiencing disappointing outcomes in recent federal elections.

In her recent interview with the 'taz', Lang advocated for the party to embrace a more aggressive stance in political engagements, distancing itself from the conciliatory approach previously adopted by current co-leader Robert Habeck.

Lang acknowledged the effectiveness of Habeck’s strategy, which aimed to broaden the Greens' appeal within the electorate and integrate the party into a wider societal spectrum.

However, she indicated that this method is no longer suitable in the current political landscape, stating, "it no longer works."

Highlighting the increasing hostility from political opponents, Lang emphasized the significance of resilience in political discourse.

She proposed the development of a new political model that strikes a balance between forging alliances and actively participating in essential political disputes.

"We need a new political model that not only seeks new alliances but is also much more conflict-capable," she remarked.

In outlining potential areas for coalition building, Lang pointed to social justice and enhancements in early childhood education as pivotal issues that could unify diverse groups.

Despite the party's ongoing struggles, with recent polling indicating a support level of approximately 12 percent, she maintains that establishing a strong progressive bloc is crucial for achieving a democratic majority to effectively counter a conservative government, potentially led by Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

The Greens party recently underwent substantial leadership changes following a series of electoral setbacks, which culminated in the resignations of Lang and the entire party board in September.

In November, Franziska Brantner and Felix Banaszak were appointed as the new leaders.

Representing the Backnang-Schwäbisch Gmünd constituency in the Bundestag, Lang continues to advocate for a redefined strategy aimed at enhancing the party's relevance and impact within German politics.
