Musk's term as a special government employee could conclude as he aims to reduce the U.S. budget deficit significantly.
Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and advisor to U.S. President
Donald Trump, has indicated that his role as a special government employee may soon conclude.
Musk is currently engaged with the Efficiency Authority Doge, a position that includes a designated 130-day term, projected to end on May 29. As of now, approximately half of this term has elapsed.
Musk has set a goal to achieve a significant reduction in the U.S. budget deficit, aiming for a $1 trillion decrease.
This objective entails reducing total government spending from about $7 trillion to $6 trillion.
He conveyed optimism regarding his capability to address the majority of necessary reforms within the remaining timeframe.
According to Musk, inefficiencies within government operations contribute to excessive waste and fraud, and he believes a 15% reduction in spending could be achieved without compromising essential government services.
The Efficiency Authority Doge reports that it has saved $115 billion for taxpayers through various means, including personnel reductions, asset sales, and the cancellation of contracts as of March 24. However, these reported savings have attracted scrutiny, as they are based on unverified figures that have previously been associated with errors and revisions.
Experts in budgetary matters have noted that reaching Musk's financial targets may require adjustments to entitlement programs, including Social Security.
It is worth mentioning that President Trump has previously dismissed the idea of cuts to such programs, given their importance to many of his constituents.
It remains uncertain whether Musk will pursue another appointment after his current role or what his plans are for any future participation in government operations.
Additionally, Musk's involvement in federal initiatives has led to political backlash in recent weeks.
At the same time, his electric vehicle company,
Tesla, has reported declining sales amidst incidents of vandalism and protests from dealership owners.
