UK Prime Minister Demands Investigation into Deaths of Humanitarian Workers in Gaza

Keir Starmer calls for accountability following the killing of 15 aid workers by Israeli military forces.
LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called for an investigation into the deaths of 15 humanitarian workers in Gaza, who were reportedly killed by the Israeli military on March 23. During a parliamentary session, Starmer emphasized the necessity of accountability, stating, "There’s got to be an investigation into that," in reference to the incident that transpired in southern Gaza.

The Israeli military has faced widespread international criticism in the wake of the killings, particularly concerning its evolving narrative regarding the circumstances of the incident.

Initial reports from the military suggested that the fatalities occurred due to a perceived threat, claiming that six Hamas militants were in the vicinity.

However, subsequent statements indicated that a comprehensive investigation was ongoing.

Earlier accounts from the military described the event as involving a response to fire against unmarked vehicles during the night.

Contradicting these assertions, a video discovered on a cell phone belonging to one of the deceased aid workers reportedly depicted clearly marked ambulances and fire engines at the scene, casting doubt on the military's narrative.

Sarah Champion, chair of the U.K. Parliament’s International Development Committee, expressed concerns over the perception among humanitarian workers that the Israeli government does not face accountability.

Champion urged Starmer to advocate for a thorough inquiry into the killings.

Supporting this call, Starmer underscored a broader issue regarding humanitarian aid access to Gaza, stating, "We have to be absolutely clear that we’re not just talking about that isolated incident.

There hasn’t been enough aid getting into Gaza at speed and at pace for a very long time."

In a related matter, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant in November for Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of utilizing "starvation as a method of warfare," among other alleged war crimes.

Starmer also addressed the U.K.’s position in promoting peace in the region, highlighting the importance of facilitating a process toward a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.

He acknowledged the complexities involved in pursuing this objective.

The Prime Minister's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict has come under scrutiny from various sectors; he has encountered criticism from supporters of Israel for suspending certain arms sales while simultaneously facing backlash from pro-Palestinian activists due to the U.K.'s ongoing military support to Israel.
