Berlin Court Reinstates AfD Membership in FC Bundestag

Court ruling paves the way for Alternative for Germany representatives to participate in parliamentary football club.
In a significant ruling, the Berlin Regional Court has ordered that representatives from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party be allowed to retain their membership in the parliamentary football club, FC Bundestag.

This decision arises from a lawsuit initiated by four AfD members of the Bundestag, which challenged a resolution passed at a club meeting in March 2024 that deemed membership incompatible with affiliation to the AfD.

The court found that the previous resolution violated the club's statutes, which clearly state that any current or former member of the German Bundestag is eligible for membership.

The judgment indicates that any amendments to the club's bylaws must follow a formal procedure and cannot be enacted through a simple resolution.

Although the AfD representatives claimed they were sidelined from certain club activities due to the decisions made in March, they have not been formally expelled from the FC Bundestag.

The ruling is not yet final, as there remains an option for appeal.

Following the court ruling, the FC Bundestag's club captain, Mahmut Özdemir, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), remarked that no definitive actions had been determined in response to the ruling.

During the March 2024 voting, a majority of 29 club members supported the motion to exclude AfD members, in contrast to 11 votes against it and 2 abstentions.

Özdemir expressed that the group's position was unambiguous, prioritizing the exclusion of individuals perceived to be associated with right-wing extremism.

The intent behind the resolution was to challenge individuals in the AfD to reflect on their membership affiliations.

In response to the court's verdict, AfD members Jörn König and Malte Kaufmann conveyed their approval, expressing eagerness to return to the pitch representing the FC Bundestag.

Established on April 12, 1961, FC Bundestag serves as a recreational football club for members of the German parliament, with its inaugural match taking place against a VIP team from WDR.

The club organizes weekly training sessions from March to November during parliamentary session weeks at the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark in Berlin.

Over the years, the FC Bundestag has had notable former members, including several politicians who have gone on to hold significant positions within the German government, such as ministers and chancellors.
