Cold Snap Grips Germany as Prolonged Snowfall Approaches

Cold Snap Grips Germany as Prolonged Snowfall Approaches

Weather forecasts predict significant snowfall and low temperatures across various regions of Germany due to a persistent cold front.
Germany is facing a notable shift in weather patterns as a cold snap takes hold, driven by a low-pressure system known as 'Tobbe', currently positioned over Denmark.

This weather system is prompting a significant drop in temperatures and an expectation of prolonged snowfall across multiple regions of the country.

The cold front is anticipated to move slowly eastward towards the Baltic area by mid-week, introducing older polar air masses particularly in the northwest.

On Wednesday, weather conditions will be affected by the cold front extending from Baden, through Thuringia, to Uckermark.

This will result in rain showers, with snowfall already occurring in the higher elevations of central mountain ranges.

As the cold front advances, some areas between the Lower Rhine and the coast may experience brief clearings, leading to isolated showers.

In the southern section of Germany, dry conditions are expected initially, although rain is projected to develop in the afternoon.

Temperature forecasts indicate a range of 4 to 9 degrees Celsius in the northern and western parts, while the Upper Rhine and Bavaria are expected to see highs between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius.

On Thursday, the weather will be dominated by the cold front covering Baden-Württemberg and Saxony, bringing overcast skies and persistent rain.

A secondary low-pressure system emerging from France is anticipated to bring showery rain to southern Germany, with snowfall predicted at elevations above 1,000 to 1,500 meters.

The snow line is expected to lower to between 800 and 400 meters, with localized hail showers possible near coastal areas.

Sunshine will be limited throughout the day due to predominantly cloudy conditions.

Temperature ranges will vary from 4 to 10 degrees Celsius, with higher mountain regions experiencing maximum temperatures around freezing.

Friday is expected to bring an additional low-pressure system moving from the Gulf of Genoa towards the Baltic.

This will create an air mass boundary over southern Germany, leading to the possibility of snow and sleet showers extending into low-lying areas north of the boundary.

The southern regions will likely remain wet and overcast, with the snow line shifting between 500 and 1,000 meters.

Forecasts for Saturday predict drier conditions in the northeastern half of Germany, with anticipated maximum temperatures between 4 and 9 degrees Celsius, while mountainous regions may only reach temperatures close to freezing.

On Sunday, ongoing rain and snowfall are expected in the south, with snow likely at elevations of 400 to 900 meters.

In contrast, high-pressure weather could dominate many other areas, potentially leading to milder temperatures ranging from 4 to 11 degrees Celsius.
