Leaders set to discuss strategic responses to the new U.S. administration at a summit in Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an emergency summit with European leaders scheduled for Monday in Paris.
The focus of this meeting will be the implications of the new administration under President
Donald Trump, particularly in relation to its foreign policy approach.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski announced Macron's plans while attending the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, stating his support for the upcoming gathering.
Sikorski emphasized that the European leaders would engage in serious discussions regarding the Trump administration's strategy, which he referred to as 'razvedka boyem' or reconnaissance through battle, suggesting a need for the European Union (EU) to consider a robust response.
Sikorski remarked, 'You push and you see what happens, and then you change your position.
… And we need to respond.' The exact timing of the summit on Monday remains unspecified, and it is unclear which EU leaders have been invited or who will attend.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot participated in the panel alongside Sikorski but refrained from confirming any details regarding the nature of the summit.
Moreover, Sikorski indicated that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to participate in the discussions.
In a social media statement, Sikorski stressed the importance of demonstrating European strength and unity in light of the challenges posed by changing dynamics under the new U.S. leadership.
As the summit approaches, the political atmosphere in Europe reflects apprehension regarding the potential directions of U.S. policy and its repercussions on international relations.
