On January 23, 2025, U.S. President
Donald Trump announced a significant artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project named 'Stargate'.
Touted as the largest IT infrastructure initiative in history, the project aims to attract at least $500 billion in investments across the United States.
Key involved entities include U.S.-based AI leader OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank Group, and U.S. technology firm Oracle.
The project announcement has triggered a public disagreement between President Trump and
Elon Musk, the CEO of
Tesla and SpaceX.
Although Musk is considered a close associate of the President, he expressed skepticism on the social media platform X, critiquing the project's funding as inadequate.
Musk claimed, based on what he described as a reliable source, that SoftBank had secured far less than ten billion dollars for its role in the project.
Contrarily, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son asserted that Stargate would be launched with an initial $100 billion, eventually reaching $500 billion in investments over four years.
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, challenged Musk's claims, calling them inaccurate and described Stargate as a significant opportunity for the United States.
Altman, present at the announcement along with Son and Oracle's Larry Ellison, subtly suggested that Musk prioritize national interests, noting his advisory role in the government.
Musk, who left OpenAI in 2018 and has since been embroiled in legal matters with the company, was noticeably absent from the event.
The Stargate project aims to develop extensive infrastructure, including large-scale data centers, to advance AI applications.
This initiative could potentially create over 100,000 jobs, acknowledging the considerable energy resources required for AI development.
A challenge facing the project is the U.S. government's lack of regulations on AI development after the repeal of a directive by Trump's predecessor,
Joe Biden.
This absence coincides with Trump's vision of Stargate ushering in a 'golden age' for the U.S., as described in his inauguration address.
The project could significantly impact the AI sector, including Musk's own ventures, such as his AI company xAI.
As speculations about presidential alliances and the project's feasibility persist, questions remain regarding potential discord between Musk and Trump.
