75th Berlin International Film Festival to Showcase Global Cinema

Berlinale 2025 set to highlight a diverse range of films and significant historical themes with a focus on newcomers and established filmmakers.
The 75th Berlin International Film Festival, known as Berlinale, is scheduled to take place from February 13 to February 23, 2025. This year's festival will begin with the world premiere of 'The Light', directed by Tom Tykwer, a notable German filmmaker recognized for his works including 'Run Lola Run' and the series 'Babylon Berlin'.

'The Light' features actors Lars Eidinger and Nicolette Krebitz and narrates the story of a middle-class family whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of a Syrian housekeeper.

During the festival’s opening ceremony, actress Tilda Swinton will receive the Honorary Golden Bear for her lifetime achievement in cinema, with a speech in her honor delivered by Edward Berger, the Oscar-nominated director known for 'All Quiet on the Western Front'.

Swinton, who has attended the Berlinale multiple times, served as jury president in 2009 and has 26 films credited at the festival.

The international jury for the festival, led by American director Todd Haynes, known for his films such as 'Carol' and 'I’m Not There', will also be introduced at the opening.

The jury comprises notable figures, including Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, German filmmaker Maria Schrader, Moroccan-French director Nabil Ayouch, German costume designer Bina Daigeler, Argentine filmmaker Rodrigo Moreno, and US critic Amy Nicholson.

This seven-member jury will determine the winners of this year’s Golden and Silver Bears, with the results announced on February 22.

The main competition of the festival features 19 films from 26 countries.

Additionally, the broader public program will showcase nearly 250 films across various sections.

Returning filmmakers in the competition include Radu Jude from Romania, who won the Golden Bear in 2021, and South Korean director Hong Sang-soo.

Two Chinese films will also make their world debuts in the competition: 'Girls on Wire' by Vivian Qu and 'Living the Land' by Huo Meng.

Notable entries include Ameer Fakher Eldin’s film 'Yunan', a co-production involving Germany and Palestine, starring actors Georges Khabbaz and Hanna Schygulla.

Another significant documentary in the main competition is 'Timestamp' by Kateryna Gornostai, which examines the impact of Russia's invasion on Ukraine's school life.

High-profile movies anticipated at the festival include Richard Linklater’s 'Blue Moon', featuring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, and Andrew Scott.

Other films generating buzz are Mary Bronstein’s 'If I Had Legs I’d Kick You', starring Rose Byrne and A$AP Rocky, and Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s 'The Ice Tower', featuring Marion Cotillard.

The Berlinale Special section will present Bong Joon Ho’s new sci-fi film 'Mickey 17' starring Robert Pattinson, alongside Timothée Chalamet in 'A Complete Unknown' and Benedict Cumberbatch in 'The Thing with Feathers'.

The festival will also engage with political and historical themes, notably marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz with screenings of Claude Lanzmann’s 'Shoah'.

Contemporary documentaries addressing current events will be featured, such as 'My Undesirable Friends: Part I - Last Air in Moscow', which focuses on Russian intellectuals in exile, and 'Das Deutsche Volk', which examines the racist shootings in Hanau in 2020.

Tricia Tuttle, the new festival director, has highlighted the Berlinale’s historical significance and political context within the film industry.

Tuttle noted the challenges of programming in a politically charged atmosphere and emphasized the festival's commitment to fostering open dialogue.

A new sidebar titled 'Perspectives' has been introduced to spotlight emerging filmmakers and their debut features, providing a competitive platform for new voices in cinema.

This program reflects a diverse array of films and a dedication to addressing significant social issues while celebrating cinematic artistry.
