Ryanair Scales Back Operations at Berlin's BER Airport Amid Criticisms

Irish airline reduces services citing punitive taxes and regulatory constraints, shifting focus to regional hubs
Ryanair, the leading Irish low-cost airline, has announced a significant downsizing of its operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), citing a combination of excessive taxation and stringent regulatory measures as the main drivers behind this strategic shift.

The announcement was made during a press briefing on Thursday, in which the airline declared it would eliminate six routes starting in March 2025, constituting a 20% reduction in its Berlin services.

Among the routes affected are those connecting Berlin to Brussels, Luxembourg, Riga, Kaunas, Krakow, and Chania on the island of Crete, as reported by local news outlets 'Tagesspiegel' and 'Berliner Zeitung'.

The cutback will prompt Ryanair to relocate two of its nine aircraft currently based at Berlin's Schönefeld site, resulting in the loss of approximately 750,000 seats annually.

Eddie Wilson, Ryanair CEO, was vocal in his critique of the operational environment in Germany, labeling the country's aviation market as 'dysfunctional'.

The airline has taken issue with the hefty aviation tax imposed and the prohibition of night flights at BER.

Wilson criticized these restrictions, particularly the night flight ban, as 'completely idiotic', arguing that they paradoxically lead to increased emissions and noise levels and pose considerable inconvenience for passengers.

In response to these operational constraints at significant airports like BER, Ryanair is now adjusting its strategic focus toward smaller regional airports that offer more competitive economic conditions.

Airports in Lübeck, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, and Niederrhein are set to benefit from increased Ryanair traffic due to their lower landing fees and overall operational costs.

Additionally, Ryanair plans to boost its operations at Bremen Airport.

Wilson praised regional airports for their willingness to maintain low operational expenses, a decisive factor in Ryanair’s reoriented business strategies.

Despite the service reduction at Berlin, BER CEO Aletta von Massenbach remains optimistic, suggesting that Ryanair's ongoing interest in the Berlin market underscores its strategic importance.

Von Massenbach noted that Ryanair had experienced an 18% increase in passenger numbers at Schönefeld in the previous year, signaling potential future developments.

Ryanair’s decision underscores the broader challenges faced by airlines operating within Germany's strictly regulated aviation sector.

These regulations have become a friction point among international carriers seeking more favorable operating conditions.

As Ryanair shifts its attention to more accommodating regional players, the effects on BER and other large airports remain uncertain as these entities strive to adapt to a competitive and evolving marketplace.
