General Aoun Elected as New President of Lebanon

Lebanon's political deadlock ends as parliament elects Army Chief Joseph Aoun, ushering in a potential new era for the nation.
Lebanon has finally broken its two-year political impasse by electing General Joseph Aoun, the Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces, as the new president.

His election, which occurred after prolonged parliamentary deadlock, saw Aoun securing 99 votes in the second round of voting, surpassing the simple majority threshold of 65 required to ascend to the presidency.

In the initial voting round, Aoun garnered only 71 out of the 128 votes, falling short of the 86 needed to clinch the presidency.

Nevertheless, he successfully achieved the requisite majority in the subsequent vote, validating his nomination.

In his inaugural address to the Parliament, President Aoun declared, 'Today marks the beginning of a new phase in Lebanon's history.' He outlined a strategic vision focusing on fortifying the military, enhancing border security, combating terrorism, implementing international resolutions, and deterring Israeli aggression.

He also assured that there would be no immunity for criminals or corruption.

Appointed as the army chief in 2017, Aoun played a crucial role in overseeing the truce brokered in November between the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia and Israel, a responsibility he continues to shoulder.

Known for his reticence in public discourse, Aoun has maintained a low media profile and did not formally announce his candidacy, which adds an intriguing dimension to his political ascent.

Some parliamentarians opposed Aoun's election, citing constitutional provisions that restrict individuals who held senior public office within the past two years from assuming the presidency.

However, such regulations have previously been set aside for earlier presidential candidates.

Political analysts perceive Aoun’s election as an opportunity for Lebanon to embark on a political rejuvenation path, effectively ending a prolonged two-year power vacuum.

The recent conflict between Hezbollah and Israel had exacerbated the country's existing turmoil, casting a shadow over its political landscape.

The consensus on Aoun potentially paves the way for renewed international aid aimed at reconstructing Lebanon.

Nations like the United States, Saudi Arabia, and France had repeatedly conditioned assistance on the resolution of the presidential vacancy.

Lebanon's complex confessional political structure, which allocates the presidency to a Christian, the premiership to a Sunni, and the parliamentary leadership to a Shia, has historically led to political standoffs.

The election of Aoun is a significant relief for the nation, which has remained leaderless for over two years, and marks the 13th attempt by the Parliament to fill the presidential void.

The unexpected convergence on Aoun’s candidacy hints at a reduction in Hezbollah's clout within Lebanese politics.

The party, weakened by the aftermath of its conflict with Israel—including the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah—and regional changes like the upheaval in Syria, has previously stalled presidential and prime ministerial appointments, often giving the impression of controlling Lebanon's top political appointments.
