German Chancellor underscores European Union's strength amidst ongoing trade tensions with the United States.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz asserted on Monday that the European Union possesses the strength and capability to defend its interests during trade negotiations with the United States.
Following a meeting with fellow EU leaders, Scholz stated, 'The European Union is strong.
We have every opportunity to make sure we can look after our own interests,' underscoring the EU's commitment to its objectives in the context of international trade.
Scholz's comments arrive as a response to heightened trade tensions, notably in the wake of U.S. trade policies under former President
Donald Trump.
The Chancellor expressed an acknowledgment of the importance of the transatlantic relationship, stating, 'And that is also a message to the United States, which at the same time is connected to us through an outstretched hand.'
In his remarks, Scholz praised Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for her diplomatic efforts that reportedly resulted in alleviating threatened tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
He characterized her approach as strategic, saying, 'The Mexican president is a smart politician.
She played it cool.'
In addition to trade issues, Scholz addressed the European Union's common defense policy, noting existing challenges such as fragmentation and the absence of large-scale defense programs.
He highlighted the need for reform, stating, 'That has to change, and that is why we have to change the way of purchasing.'
Furthermore, Scholz responded to U.S. demands regarding aid to Ukraine, criticizing the proposition that Ukraine should provide rare earths in exchange for additional American support.
He described the proposal as 'very selfish, very self-centered,' arguing that the country's resources should instead be prioritized for reconstruction efforts following the ongoing war.
