Pedro Sánchez Highlights Social Media's Impact on Democratic Processes at World Economic Forum
DAVOS, Switzerland — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the World Economic Forum on January 22, 2025, raising concerns about the influence of technology billionaires on democratic processes through social media platforms.
Sánchez pointed out that while technology was initially intended to promote freedom, it has, in some cases, been repurposed as a tool of oppression.
He highlighted the ability of social media to spread disinformation, citing the challenges posed by short-form content and inadequate fact-checking mechanisms, which he believes contribute to societal division and manipulation.
In his speech, Sánchez emphasized the importance of the European Union taking steps to address these issues and proposed a series of measures to increase accountability among social media companies.
These proposals include implementing user identification procedures to combat fake profiles and utilizing the Digital Services Act to ensure platform owners are held accountable for the content shared on their sites.
Sánchez refrained from naming specific technology figures but referred to a 2009 perspective by venture capitalist Peter Thiel, which questioned the compatibility of freedom and democracy.
His remarks came in the wake of earlier controversies involving
Elon Musk, CEO of the social media platform X, regarding allegations of promoting divisive rhetoric.
The World Economic Forum has provided a platform for discussions focusing on balancing the potential benefits of technology with the risks associated with its misuse.
Sánchez's address comes just before an imminent meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels, where further regulatory approaches to social media and its ownership are anticipated to be a key topic on the agenda.
