A charter flight from Islamabad brings new evacuees as the future of Germany's admission program remains in doubt.
A chartered airplane carrying 174 Afghans landed at Hannover Airport on Thursday afternoon, according to the German Interior Ministry.
The flight, which departed from Islamabad, Pakistan, was part of Germany's admission program launched in 2021 following the Taliban's return to power in
Afghanistan.
All individuals aboard had been granted admission to Germany prior to the flight, comprising 82 women and 92 men, with 74 minors, including nine children under the age of two.
Germany's admission program is intended to assist individuals who supported German forces or civilian organizations during the two-decade conflict in
Afghanistan, recognizing them and their families as at risk of retaliation from the Taliban.
Despite the initiative, concerns persist regarding the status of approximately 2,800 at-risk Afghans who have been granted admission but have not yet arrived in Germany.
Recent political negotiations have led to indications that no new admissions will occur under the existing policy framework.
A spokesperson for the Interior Ministry noted, "This is about Germany's existing commitments." This situation emerges amid rising anti-migrant sentiments in Germany, particularly from right-wing political factions such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which advocate for stricter migration controls and deportations.
Incidents involving refugees, including Afghan nationals, have intensified this narrative.
Prior to boarding, all passengers underwent security interviews to assess their safety and compliance with admission criteria.
Reports indicate that some individuals who had previously received admission approvals were turned away before the flight, with at least three visas invalidated by federal authorities.
The ongoing arrivals of at-risk Afghans juxtaposed with escalating political pressure to restrict migration underscore the significant complexities and challenges facing refugee admissions in Germany's current political landscape.
