Senior U.S. officials to negotiate in Saudi Arabia amid previous commitments to ceasefire discussions.
A delegation from U.S. President
Donald Trump's administration is scheduled to engage in discussions in Saudi Arabia with negotiators from Russia and Ukraine to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, U.S. officials confirmed on Saturday.
The delegation will comprise Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Middle East negotiator Steve Witkoff.
This diplomatic move follows Trump's announcement regarding a recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking their first dialogue since Trump took office again.
In the call, both leaders agreed to pursue talks focusing on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.
The specific timing and travel schedule for the meetings between the U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian negotiators have not been disclosed.
However, Rubio's trip to Saudi Arabia was previously scheduled as part of his inaugural Middle Eastern tour, which commenced with his arrival in Israel on the same day.
Earlier on Saturday, Rubio held a conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during which he reiterated President Trump's commitment to finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, according to the U.S. State Department.
Steve Witkoff has played a key role in U.S. efforts to negotiate on various fronts, including a recent prisoner exchange that facilitated the Trump-Putin dialogue.
His recent activities include a trip to Moscow aimed at securing the release of American detainee Marc Fogel.
In a statement this week, Trump announced the assignment of Rubio, Waltz, Witkoff, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe to accelerate negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Reactions from Kyiv and its European allies indicate concerns regarding Trump's initiative, with worries about being excluded from discussions that could significantly impact Ukraine’s future, particularly following a marked military escalation in the region.
This conflict is noted as the most extensive ground engagement in Europe since World War II.
