Jörg Meuthen Resumes Teaching Role at Hochschule Kehl After Political Career

Former leader of the AfD returns to academia to teach economics to future civil servants, following a hiatus due to political duties.
Jörg Meuthen, the former leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has officially resumed his teaching role at Hochschule Kehl, effective March 1, 2025. This transition marks his return to academia after a lengthy absence since 2016, during which he served as a member of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament.

Meuthen will be instructing students who are preparing for prospective careers in public administration, with a focus on economics.

During his time in parliament, Meuthen's teaching responsibilities were put on hold, as dictated by institutional regulations.

According to Joachim Beck, the rector of Hochschule Kehl, the university is legally required to facilitate the return of lecturers once they conclude their political responsibilities.

“When the vacationing lecturer wishes to return to the university after their time as a parliamentarian, the university must enable this, as per the legal framework we adhere to,” Beck stated.

The announcement of Meuthen's reappointment generated significant discussions within the academic community, particularly after news began circulating in the autumn of 2024. Meuthen is scheduled to conduct an extensive workload of 18 hours of lectures per week.

Following the news, the initiative “Aufstehen gegen Rassismus” in nearby Offenburg reached out to the university administration.

They inquired about possible measures to challenge Meuthen's return to teaching, reflecting concerns regarding his previous political affiliation.

Rector Beck has reiterated the university's commitment to neutrality, stating, “Mr. Meuthen has assured us that he will strictly adhere to this principle.” He emphasized Meuthen's qualifications, citing prior evaluations that portrayed him as an exceptionally effective lecturer before he entered the political arena.

Hochschule Kehl serves approximately 1,400 students, characterizing it as a relatively small institution within the higher education landscape.

Meuthen himself expressed a relaxed attitude regarding his reinstatement, commenting, “I see this return without concern,” and indicating a desire to focus on depoliticization in his teaching philosophy.

In an interview, Rector Beck referred to Meuthen as a “nice colleague,” acknowledging his approachability and professional competencies while also describing his past involvement with the AfD as “terrible.”

At 63 years old, Meuthen has had a varied political career.

He served as a Member of the European Parliament for the AfD from 2017 until his departure from the party in January 2022, citing fears over the party's radicalization.

He subsequently operated as an independent Member of the European Parliament until exiting the European Parliament altogether in the summer of 2024. Meuthen briefly joined a centrist party and, as of September 2024, has been associated with the conservative party Werteunion, led by Hans-Georg Maaßen.

A survey conducted among several students regarding Meuthen's return to teaching revealed that many were unaware of his political background, with a variety of opinions expressed about his past teaching performance.

Some students voiced concerns about the potential challenges of discussing political criticisms as they prepare for roles in public service.
