Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Addresses Acquisition Rumors and Export Restrictions at Annual Developer Conference

Huang denies involvement in Intel acquisition talks and discusses the implications of AI chip export regulations.
During Nvidia's annual developer conference, CEO Jensen Huang addressed recent rumors regarding Nvidia's potential role in the acquisition of Intel's chip manufacturing operations.

Huang categorically denied involvement in any negotiations, stating, "If there’s a party, nobody invited me," in response to reports suggesting that Nvidia was in talks alongside TSMC, AMD, and Broadcom.

These discussions reportedly centered on forming a joint venture for taking over Intel's struggling chip production.

Huang highlighted the inaccuracies of the reports, adding, "I don’t know where this came from.

No one invited me to the party.

Maybe others are involved, but not me."

Additionally, Huang spoke on the recent AI chip export restrictions imposed by the Biden administration, which categorize countries into three tiers based on their access to AI chip exports.

The first tier includes the United States and 17 allied nations, where no restrictions apply.

The third tier comprises countries such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, which face a complete ban on AI chip exports.

Countries classified in the second tier, including Poland, Mexico, and Israel, can still receive AI chips but within specific computational limits.

Huang emphasized the necessity of AI technology across all sectors, asserting, "AI is a technology that every country, every industry, and every company needs." He expressed a desire to support access to AI technology globally, noting the benefits for both countries and the United States.

On the topic of tariffs imposed during the Trump administration, Huang estimated their impact on Nvidia as minimal.

He stated, "We have a very flexible supply network...

In the short term, we don’t foresee any significant impact on our operations." He also mentioned plans to enhance local production capabilities in the U.S. by the end of the year to further mitigate tariff effects.

Regarding export restrictions targeting China, instituted in the fall of 2023, Huang reiterated Nvidia's commitment to operate within legal frameworks while striving to serve global markets.

He pointed out that 50% of the world’s AI researchers are based in China, underscoring the country's substantial contributions to AI development.

Finally, Huang tackled the significant energy demands for data centers dedicated to AI model development, arguing that the conversation around energy consumption needs reevaluation.

He characterized AI as a new manufacturing industry requiring energy, asking whether nations are willing to invest in this sphere versus traditional sectors like agriculture or steel manufacturing.

Under Huang's leadership, Nvidia continues to solidify its prominent position in the AI and GPU markets, recognized for its advancements in AI, deep learning, and high-performance computing.

The company remains focused on navigating international challenges while pushing forward in the realms of technological innovation and supply chain flexibility.
