Shift in German Political Landscape as Union Parties Decline and AfD Gains Support

Recent polls show a notable shift in voter preference, with the Alternative for Germany surging as Union parties face challenges.
Recent polling data has indicated a significant shift in the German political landscape, particularly affecting the Union parties—comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU).

According to the latest ARD 'Deutschlandtrend' survey, the CDU and CSU collectively recorded a voter support level of 26 percent, marking a three percentage point decline and their lowest standing since October 2022. In contrast, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has seen a notable increase, rising to 24 percent, reflecting a three percentage point gain and achieving its highest percentage in the history of this polling series.

This changing dynamic has been corroborated by a Forsa poll, which placed the AfD just one percentage point behind the Union parties.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has maintained a steady support at 16 percent, while the Greens have experienced a minor decline, falling to 11 percent, which represents a one percentage point decrease.

The Left Party has registered slight gains, increasing to 10 percent.

Meanwhile, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) remains under the critical five percent threshold, holding steady at four percent with a one percentage point increase.

Other smaller parties collectively command five percent in support.

Despite the challenges faced by the Union parties, a substantial portion of the surveyed electorate remains optimistic about the prospects of a coalition government formation involving the Union and the SPD.

The survey reveals that 79 percent of respondents are confident that such a coalition will be established, in contrast to only 14 percent expressing doubts regarding its feasibility.

Furthermore, there is a notable collective concern regarding the parties' abilities to address pressing political issues; 20 percent of respondents indicated significant concern, while 53 percent expressed considerable concern about the political landscape, with only 19 percent reporting minimal concern and 4 percent expressing no concern at all.

The poll conducted by Infratest dimap surveyed 1,334 eligible voters across Germany from March 31 to April 2, 2025, with a margin of error between two and three percentage points.

It is important to note that polling results are inherently uncertain and subject to various influences, including fluctuating party loyalties and changing voter preferences.

Polls serve as a snapshot of public sentiment at the time of the survey and do not provide definitive predictions of future election outcomes.
