German Counties Advocate for Suspension of Refugee Admissions Amid Rising Migration Concerns

The Deutscher Landkreistag urges a halt to the intake of war refugees, highlighting challenges in integration and rising migration figures.
The Deutscher Landkreistag (DLT), representing nearly 300 counties across Germany, has called for an immediate cessation of refugee admissions from conflict-affected areas.

DLT President Achim Brötel, affiliated with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), articulated significant apprehensions regarding the prevailing migration situation in the country and urged political leaders in Berlin to acknowledge the limits of Germany's capacity to accept and integrate refugees.

Brötel highlighted a stark increase in migration since 2015, reporting that approximately four million additional individuals have relocated to Germany over the past decade.

He underscored the changes in circumstances, citing that conditions which once facilitated voluntary humanitarian aid have now intensified into a more challenging environment for schools and labor markets.

In his statements, he emphasized the necessity for a swift governmental response to ensure a fair distribution of refugee intake across the European Union.

Brötel called for the ruling parties, including the CDU and the Social Democrats (SPD), to implement migration reforms that were previously promised by Friedrich Merz without further delay.

He cautioned that a failure to manage immigration effectively could bolster support for extremist parties, such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

As part of the proposed measures, Brötel suggested the implementation of strict policies, potentially including the denial of asylum seekers at the borders.

He also advocated for the reduction of benefits for those whose asylum applications have been rejected, arguing that ongoing financial support is a disincentive for these individuals to leave Germany.

He noted that in other European Union nations, rejected asylum seekers experience significant cuts to their financial aid, a practice he believes contributes to many choosing to migrate to Germany.

Tensions surrounding refugee policy have escalated amid coalition discussions involving the CDU, CSU, and SPD.

Compounding these issues, the German government has temporarily suspended its involvement in a United Nations resettlement initiative that was designed to assist particularly vulnerable refugees.

According to confirmations from the Interior Ministry, no new admissions will be processed while coalition negotiations remain unresolved.

Previously, Germany had committed to accepting 13,100 refugees through this program in 2024 and 2025, though only a small portion of these slots has been utilized.

Current regulations permit exceptions only for cases that are in advanced stages of processing, signifying a marked shift in Germany's refugee admission strategy.
