Brandenburg, a northeastern state in Germany, is grappling with an unexpected outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), a highly infectious viral disease, after three water buffalo from a herd in Hönow succumbed to the illness.

This marks the country's first reported case in over 35 years, sparking immediate and stringent containment measures to prevent its spread.

Agriculture Minister for Brandenburg, Hanka Mittelstädt, announced the unfortunate loss of three water buffalo to the disease, an occurrence that has mobilized local and national health and agricultural authorities.

A precautionary culling of the remaining eleven buffalo in the affected herd has commenced to halt any further transmission, the local district office in Seelow confirmed.

Moreover, Friedemann Hanke, the Vice District Administrator of Märkisch-Oderland, has ordered the culling of all cloven-hoofed animals within a one-kilometer radius around the infected site.

This includes four sheep and approximately 200 pigs from a nearby breeding farm in Barnim County.

The FLI warns that the risk of re-introduction into Europe exists, fueled by increasing global trade and travel.

History serves as a reminder, with the devastating 2001 outbreak in the United Kingdom that later affected several European countries.

The resurgence of FMD in Germany has alarmed both national and regional authorities, leading to the formation of a crisis task force.

Tomorrow, Minister Mittelstädt is scheduled to visit Märkisch-Oderland to supervise the enactment of emergency protocols, including the establishment of an exclusion zone with a radius of at least three kilometers.

During this period, the transportation of animals is strictly prohibited to prevent any potential spread.

Next week, the German Bundestag will address this pressing issue, with the Committee on Food and Agriculture convening a special session as requested by the Green Party and SPD.

Notably, Federal Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir will participate in these critical discussions.
